35 Entrata Avenue, San Anselmo — Tucked away at the end of quiet Entrada Avenue in San Anselmo’s historic Barber Tract neighborhood, 35 Entrata is a magical craftsman estate recently restored to its former grandeur with today’s modern living in mind. The private gated entry opens to reveal a truly special residence which includes a 4 bedroom/4 bath main house, 2 guest cottages, a large pool, mature gardens, and a 3-car garage all on a sunny half-acre parcel offering walk-to-town convenience.
Guest are welcomed into this home through stunning antique doors of wood, glass and decorative metal, providing a sense of history and a bygone era. These special doors open into one of the properties jaw-droppers – a fully-conditioned sun porch, featuring striking custom tile flooring, charming Edison-bulb light fixtures, and beautiful original paned windows looking out onto the garden. It is truly a breathtaking and unique extension of the home. This could be an ideal space for large family Thanksgiving dinners or a quiet spot to escape and read a book.
The home features a modern open floor plan ideal for entertaining, with the kitchen opening onto spacious indoor and outdoor dining spaces, as well as the family room. A private “kid’s den” and office are just off the family room, along with a half bath.
The brand-new chef’s kitchen features premium Thermador stainless appliances, including a built-in microwave, dishwasher, chef’s range with double ovens and French door refrigerator. The custom painted cabinetry is stunning against the antique brass hardware, white quartz counters and farmhouse sink. A large walk- in butler’s pantry off the kitchen offers plenty of storage as well as room for an additional refrigerator for larger families. There is also additional counter space in the butler’s pantry ideal for staging meals and beverages for entertaining.
The extra-large swimming pool features an in-pool spa and spacious patio and deck just off the kitchen and main living area. The pool is ideally oriented to receive sun most of the day. The gardens on the property are a mixture of new and mature plantings including several types of fruit trees. One of the stars of the garden is the Angel Trumpet plant which perfumes the evening air with its intoxicating fragrance. There is also a level lawn area, a vintage rose-covered arbor, a fire pit area and even a goldfish pond.
The estate also includes two private, detached guest cottages, each at opposite ends of the property. Both guest cottages feature one bedroom and one bathroom as well as a sitting area. They would also be perfect as a home office or studio.
All four bedrooms including the master suite are located upstairs on the same level. The master suite retreat offers 3 closets outfitted with Elfa closet systems and a large ensuite bath with soaking tub, dual sink vanity, a glass enclosed shower and custom tiling. There is also a “coffee porch” off the master suite overlooking the beautifully-landscaped grounds below.
35 Entrata was built in the early 1900s by Fred H. Field according to the San Anselmo Historical Museum. According to their website, “The lot at 35 Entrata was purchased by Fred. H. Field, a local building contractor who constructed the San Anselmo Public Library, and it is likely that he built the house there.”
San Anselmo, a quaint, inviting town bordering San Rafael, Ross and Fairfax, continues to maintain its small town charm. The main shopping area is a welcoming curving boulevard of boutiques, coffee shops, galleries, antique stores and popular restaurants, including Madcap, Insalatas, Marinitas, cucina sa, and one of my favorite Marin lunch spots, M.H. Bread and Butter. The most visible landmark in town, a beautiful stone castle that overlooks San Anselmo, is actually the San Francisco Theological Seminary, established in 1892 to train Presbyterian clergy.
San Anselmo stands at the crossroads of Sir Francis Drake and Red Hill Avenue, offering two options to drive to Highway 101. Golden Gate Transit also serves San Anselmo, with express commuter buses into San Francisco.
