61 Gold Hill Grade, San Rafael — Situated behind custom gates at the end of Gold Hill Grade in the exclusive Dominican neighborhood of San Rafael, this newly-constructed 4 BR+office / 6.5 BA modern farmhouse masterpiece has it all – an open-concept floor plan, sparkling blue swimming pool off the main living level, expansive level lawn, panoramic Mt. Tam views, exquisite privacy and premium design and finishes throughout. No detail has been overlooked in making this estate a home that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
Newly-built from the ground up and completed in 2020, this home is perfectly situated on one of the last remaining lots in the bucolic Dominican neighborhood. Just minutes from 101 but a world apart, 61 Gold Hill Grade offers true boutique resort living with the finest of finishes and impeccably-designed grounds.
Entering the home’s main level, visitors are greeted with soaring ceilings and spacious, light-filled rooms that flow effortlessly to multiple outdoor living spaces. The quality of the home and the attention to detail is immediately apparent upon entering the home
The open-concept kitchen/family room is perfect for entertaining and family gatherings. A wall of glass opens up to create a seamless indoor/outdoor flow out to the stunning pool/patio area. Truly a chef’s dream, the kitchen features Wolf, Subzero, U-Line and Miele appliances, a beautiful custom black hood, high-end cabinetry, quartz counters and a large center island ideal for informal dining and gathering.
The jaw-dropping living/dining room features soaring ceilings and a modern gas fireplace that may be enjoyed either inside the home or outside on the spacious entertaining deck. French doors flanking the fireplace provide easy access to the deck.
The sparkling pool enjoys full sun for most of the day. A wall of glass from the kitchen/family rooms slides open to create the perfect flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. A true show-stopper, this spectacular pool is surrounded by a large bluestone patio with stunning views of Mt. Tamalpais. There is even a full bath accessed from outside and custom-designed for the pool. No detail has been overlooked in creating an easy, luxurious resort lifestyle.
Three bedrooms are located on the upper level and all feature custom en-suite bathrooms. The master suite retreat overlooks the swimming pool and boasts panoramic Mt. Tam views, high ceilings and an enormous walk-in closet. The spa-like master bath is worthy of a 6-Star boutique resort featuring a custom black soaking tub, Carrara marble floors and walls, floating vanity with dual sinks and an integrated Carrara marble counter, large walk-in shower with glass surround and a frosted glass enclosed toilet room.
The lower level features a spacious media room that opens out to the lawn area. The media room has been pre-wired for surround sound speakers and ease audio/visual equipment installation. There is also a full bath with beautiful custom tile and high-end finishes. In addition to the media room, this level features a glass enclosed wine lounge that could also be an optional gym. A mud-area with built-in bench and storage is located just inside from the three-car garage.
The home’s main level also features a spacious guest suite with a private bath and deck, an office, powder room and a full bath accessed from outside for the pool.
The beautifully landscaped grounds include a large level lawn perfect for entertaining or play, a rarity in Marin. The home’s southwest orientation provides bright sunlight for the majority of the day.
San Rafael is Marin’s oldest and largest city, with a population of close to 60,000 people. Established in 1874, it is the seat of the County of Marin and is home to Marin’s second most popular tourist destination (after Muir Woods), the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center. The building was the last major structure and the only government building designed by the world famous architect. It is now a national historic landmark and hosts one of the country’s best farmers markets each Thursday (seasonal, downtown) and Sunday (year-round).
Named after the Mission San Rafael Archangel, built by Spanish missionaries in 1817, San Rafael is located 11 miles north of San Francisco. The area enjoys some of the best weather in Marin as it is largely free of the coastal fog that areas closer to San Francisco experience. At the city’s heart is its charming, vibrant downtown shopping district which is a mixture of Victorian commercial buildings, ethnic restaurants, street cafes, retail stores, a historic movie theater and numerous music venues, giving San Rafael its hometown flavor.
This beautiful area, less-commonly referred to as Black Canyon, is situated in a highly-desirable location east of Highway 101 and surrounds the campus of Dominican University of California. It is located just minutes from downtown San Rafael, and is walking / biking distance to a number of restaurants and coffee shops. Nearby supermarkets include Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, and United Markets.
The neighborhood, which most call “The Dominican,” is known for its historic homes, including many in the Victorian and Mediterranean styles. Bounded by open space to the north and east, it is a walker’s paradise, with fire roads criss-crossing the open space. Many homes feature sunny southern exposures with views of San Rafael city lights and Mt. Tamalpais. Some residents like to bike and hike in nearby Barbier Park. The neighborhood also features a property owners association with a very informative website featuring the latest neighborhood news.
The area is served by Coleman Elementary School. For high school there is a choice between either San Rafael High School or Terra Linda High School, but be sure to check with the San Rafael School District to verify availability and enrollment. The prestigious Marin Academy is also located nearby. You may wish to consult my Marin schools guide for more information.
Also be sure to check out one of my favorite hikes in the Dominican: The Gold Hill Fire Road Trail Hike just steps away from the front gate of 61 Gold Hill Grade.
