Please scroll down to see Larkspur homes for sale or continue reading for more information on this popular town. Halfway between Sausalito and San Rafael and nestled between Mt. Tamalpais and the Bay, you will find the beautiful historic town of Larkspur. Formed in 1908, this upper middle class community is over 100 years old.
Small-Town Ambiance With Historic Buildings and Some of Marin’s Best Restaurants
Downtown Larkspur is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is reminiscent of towns of the turn-of-the-century. The residents have been quite successful in preserving the small-town, family-friendly ambiance. An annual favorite is the 4th of July Parade that goes down Magnolia Avenue through downtown. Today Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur’s “Main Street,” is lined with trendy shops, cafés and restaurants. Many historic buildings remain including the beautifully-restored Lark Theater. Some of my favorite Larkspur establishments are Gia Ristorante, Perry’s, Emporio Rulli, Picco and R’noh Thai to name a few.
Larkspur is Home to the Very Popular Marin Country Mart
Larkspur is divided into two distinct areas adjoining Highway 101. Its historic downtown is west of Highway 101, and an old quarry area, now known as Larkspur Landing is to the east of the highway and is home to the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal providing ferry rides to the San Francisco Ferry Building and to the San Francisco Giants home games. Across from the Larkspur ferry is the fashionable and very-popular Marin Country Mart which offers upscale shopping, dining, yoga and a weekly farmer’s market. The SMART Train is currently being extended from San Rafael to the Larkspur ferry terminal.
A Mecca for Bikers and Hikers
There is no shortage of hiking and biking in Larkspur, which serves as a key stop along the mostly-completed North-South Greenway connecting Marin from the Golden Gate bridge in the south to Novato in the north. The well-used Larkspur-Corte Madera Path is a key segment of this path. Hikers enjoy the King Mountain open space, a 108-acre preserve on the hills above Larkspur. One of my favorites is the Baltimore Canyon hike off of Madrone Avenue. In short, Larkspur is a mecca for bikers and hikers — view the Marin bicycle map here. Larkspur Features Beautiful Homes, Great Schools
Larkspur offers a variety of housing including quaint historic homes near downtown, newer homes located on the area’s waterways and large hillside homes hidden among the trees. GreatSchools.org ranks Larkspur schools close to the top of their scale. The town shares schools with nearby Corte Madera and a police department with San Anselmo and Corte Madera which is why they are referred to as the “Twin Cities.” And like its “Twin City,” it is among the most popular places to live in Marin County.

THE LARKSPUR LIFESTYLE
Shopping, Dining and More: Something for Everyone
Weather
Larkspur is located at the foot of Mount Tamalpais in Central Marin and enjoys a temperate climate. Early morning low clouds often turn into beautiful sunny days. Click here to see the latest weather for Larkspur.
Schools
Many choose to move to Larkspur because of its excellent award-winning schools including Neil Cummins Elementary, Hall Middle School and Redwood High School. Private schools include Marin Primary & Middle School. Click here to see my Marin Schools Page.
Commute
The commute via the Larkspur ferry is one of the most civilized commutes in the bay area, with gorgeous views and even food & wine served on-board. The ferry disembarks at San Francisco’s famous Ferry Building with its plethora of gourmet shops and restaurants. Larkspur is just a few minutes from the freeway and then approximately 14 miles to downtown San Francisco. In addition, the SMART train has been extended to Larkspur for commutes northward. Click here to see the Larkspur ferry schedules.
Hiking & The Outdoors
Larkspur is a haven for hikers and bikers. Hiking Baltimore Canyon is one of my favorite Marin hikes, and its easy to connect to trails leading to Mount Tamalpais and beyond to San Francisco if you’re feeling ambitious. I love the nearby King Mountain hike as well as hiking on Crown Road. Download the Marin Bicycle Map here for a list of biking routes.
Local Markets
The Marin Country Mart Farmer’s Market is a very popular shopping option for Larkspur residents. It features fresh produce, seafood, meats and cheeses, and entertainment for the kids such as face painting and pony rides. Many supermarkets are just minutes away, including Molly Stone’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Woodlands Market.
Fitness Centers
There are a number of fitness centers, gyms and yoga studios in addition to the outside recreational opportunities for exercise in Larkspur. Popular venues include: The Bay Club, SoulCycle, Pilates ProWorks, Orangetheory and 24-Hour Fitness. For Yoga: Yogaworks, Iyengar Yoga, and Metta Yoga are all popular.
